Student Insurance
Mandatory Health, Life, and Disability Insurance for Students
All NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine students are required to maintain continuous active medical insurance sponsored by a domestic health insurance plan.
For the academic year 2026–2027, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine medical insurance will be provided by  (PPO plan). Every student is required to enroll in the insurance plan unless an acceptable waiver is provided in a timelyÌý³¾²¹²Ô²Ô±ð°ù.
The only acceptable reasons to waive a NYITCOM medical plan are:
- Student is covered under a parent’s employers group insurance; or
- Student is covered under a spouse’s employers group insurance; or
- Student is covered under a partner’s employers group insurance; or
- Student is covered by Medicaid in the state of their campus (NY students must have NY Medicaid, AR students must have AR Medicaid) – Didactic students only
- Clinical students may not waive with Medicaid* coverage (only exception is students that reside in the state of NY or AR for the entire year and provide proof of E*Value schedule)
- Any other state Medicaid is not accepted
- *Note on Medicaid: You cannot have active Medicaid if you are enrolled in the student plan. This is considered insurance fraud.
- Student is covered by Military/VA
- Student is on COBRA
- Student is on Medicare
- Student is on an individually purchased, ACA-compliant domestic health insurance plan –with the following additional requirements:
- The plan deductible must not be more than $3,000.00
- The plan out-of-pocket maximum must not be more than $7000.00
- The plan must have a provider network for primary care, specialty, hospital, and diagnostics care
- Students on rotations must have comprehensive coverage at all rotation sites
Students may not opt out of life and disability plans. Life and disability insurance will be provided by the  for all students. Students may not waive life, disability, and AD&D coverage.
Enrollment Information
All students must complete a beneficiary form (to ensure proper information for the insurance company and to specify your chosen beneficiary) even when not on the Aetna Student Health policy. The form can be found at .
Incoming students must have their enrollment submission and/or waiver submission completed no later than June 30th. You should submit your enrollment or waiver request to .
If there is a change in insurance status for you or your dependent, (i.e. you are no longer covered by the insurance you indicated on your waiver; marriage; birth of a child; etc.), you must complete the appropriate online request to  within 14 calendar days of the date of change.
A student’s bursar account is charged for medical, life, and disability insurance automatically. Charges for medical insurance will only be removed if a proper waiver has been submitted through the NYITCOM/HSAC online portal and approved by your waiver deadline. There will be no exceptions. NYITCOM can cancel the student health insurance policy within 15 days and no premium will be collected. The insurance carrier does not issue refunds.
Waiver information will be verified several times throughout the year. A current waiver with active insurance coverage must always be on file. You do not need to submit a waiver unless your insurance coverage has changed, or you receive a new insurance card. Waiver information may be submitted online to  with a copy of the front and back of your current health insurance ID card(s).
The annual waiver periods are as follows:
- 1st year students – May 15 – June 30
- 2nd year students – May 15 – June 30
- 3rd year students – May 15 – June 30
- 4th year students – May 1 – May 31
- Spring Semester – December 1 – January 15
 If an annual waiver is not approved, the student will automatically be enrolled in the NYITCOM-sponsored student medical plan.
Procedure to Enroll After the Initial Eligibility Period
A student or a dependent on a student who is eligible for coverage but does not enroll when originally eligible, may enroll for coverage if all of the following conditions are met:
- The student (or dependent) was covered under a group health plan or health insurance coverage at the time coverage was offered, and
- The student stated in writing (waiver form) that coverage under a group health plan or health insurance coverage was the reason for declining coverage, and
- The student’s or dependent’s coverage was terminated as a result of loss of eligibility for coverage (including loss of dependent status under a parent’s coverage, legal separation, divorce, death, or termination of employment), and
- The student requests enrollment in the student sponsored plan not later than 30 calendar days after the termination date of the loss of eligibility.
Loss of Coverage
- The student or dependent will have to provide proof of loss of other coverage in writing within the enrollment period (30 days).
- Plans that qualify to waive the NYITCOM student insurance plan are:
- Parent’s Employer Group
- Spouse’s Employer Group
- Partner’s Employer Group
- COBRA – must be from an acceptable plan to waive of Parent, Spouse or Partner’s Employer Group. Own Employer Group COBRA is not accepted as Own Employer Group coverage does not meet requirements to waive.
- Veteran/Tricare Benefits
- New York Medicaid – Didactic Students only (1st and 2nd year) – must live in the state the entire academic year. Clinical students (3rd and 4th years) are not allowed to waive with any state Medicaid or limited-coverage plans, unless all rotations are in the state where coverage is provided. - Arkansas Medicaid – Didactic Students only (1st and 2nd year) – must live in the state the entire academic year. Clinical students (3rd and 4th years) are not allowed to waive with any state Medicaid or limited-coverage plans, unless all rotations are in the state where coverage is provided. Your schedule must be provided to HSAC by your waiver deadline. You may upload your schedule with your waiver submission, or email your schedule to –Â brianna@hsac.com
- No other state Medicaid is accepted to waive the NYITCOM student insurance plan
- Medicare
- Individual Plans – Marketplace –
- Deductible MUST NOT be more than $3,000 for individual and family (In many cases, even if an individual deductible is listed, the family deductible must be met before benefits apply and is considered the deductible). HSAC will verify individual plans quarterly).
- Maximum Out of Pocket Expense of no more than $6,350.
Acceptable coverage to waive the NYITCOM-Sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan for all plans must include:
- A provider network in the area of your NYITCOM campus for primary care, specialty, hospital, and diagnostic care. Students must have comprehensive coverage in the states where the student has designated rotations (HMO plans only provide coverage for the state the coverage is issued in; therefore, a student on rotations may not waive with an HMO plan)
- Unlimited Major Medical Coverage
- Preventive health services
- Prescription coverage
- Mental health coverage
Medicaid coverage will not be accepted for any student during clinical years unless every clinical rotation takes place in New York or Arkansas for the entire year. If you were previously approved to waive with Medicaid, you will be eligible to waive with proof of schedule that all your rotations take place in either New York for New York Medicaid or Arkansas for Arkansas Medicaid.
To be eligible to waive with Medicaid and limited coverage (HMO, EPO) plans, you are required to provide HSAC a copy of your EValue schedule that shows all rotations in the state of Medicaid/Limited coverage plan for the entire year. You must provide your EValue schedule to HSAC by your required deadline. If you have not provided your EValue schedule to HSAC by your deadline, NYITCOM will be notified, and your enrollment in the NYITCOM student insurance plan will be finalized. You may upload your schedule with your waiver submission .
Own employer group, short-term health insurance policies, indemnity plans, traveler’s plans, limited benefit plans, or plans originating outside the United States will not be accepted as part of the waiver process.
Waiver submissions are not accepted via email. All waiver submissions must be submitted through the online portal. Once coverage is verified, If there is any gap in coverage, your waiver will be declined.
