鈥淎s a registered dietitian nutritionist for more than 40 years, I can attest through my interaction with hundreds of clients that maintaining a healthful weight requires long-term lifestyle changes,鈥 she explains. 鈥淭hus, the slower, prudent loss of one to two pounds each week may take months or even years 鈥 the payoff is that with time, lifestyle changes and habits are more likely to become permanent with a long-term effect on weight.鈥 She also stresses the critical nature of self-compassion. 鈥淲hen you may be less accepting of yourself if you feel you didn鈥檛 reach your goal, ask yourself what you would say to a good friend who had a similar experience.鈥
