The volume provides strategies, tools, and resources to library and information workers and students who wish to drive change in their communities and incorporate social justice into their everyday practice. With contributors from a diverse group of librarians, who have experience working in different types of institutions and roles, the book showcases the actions information professionals, largely from historically marginalized groups, are taking to create a more socially responsible environment for themselves and their communities.

The work of Aalto and selected contemporary architects, along with computer modeling software, showcases the importance of comprehensive design.

The book uses Goldberg's own story—the activist education of a well-intentioned, if slightly naive, nice gay Jewish theater queen—to tell the larger chronological history of AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), the grassroots AIDS activist organization that confronted politicians, scientists, drug companies, religious leaders, the media, and an often uncaring public to successfully change the course of the AIDS epidemic.
